North-eastern Europe in deep freeze

The chart below shows the daytime highs from today (Tuesday) across Europe, and highlights the bitterly cold weather currently affecting the north-east.

Temperatures have remained below -10C in many areas of the Baltic region and western Russia. The very cold air also affects Poland, where highs are around -5C, and overnight lows down to -18C.

A brisk easterly wind around the southern Baltic Sea adds to the raw feel. Some snow flurries have affected some coastal areas.

The harsh conditions will continue for the rest of the week, and then temperatures will slowly rise into the weekend, as fronts move in from the south-west. This will bring snowfall to southern Scandinavia.

Meanwhile, low pressure over the Black Sea region brings snowfall to Romania by Thursday. There will be some snow too in Alpine regions this week, but conditions are generally milder here, with rain at low levels for Switzerland and Austria.
