A great day for DIY wind speed measuring

With strong to gale force winds forecast over much of the UK, and some high seas to, it's a great day for learning how to estimate winds from the Beaufort Scale.

It's this scale that I use at Weatherweb when describing the wind speeds. Many people make the mistake of thinking the Beaufort Scale is just for sailors, but it really isn't.

The advantage of being able to estimate winds from the scale is that you can readily set your own limits for the jobs you are performing. So, it may be that for a farmer F3 is the highest you'd like for certain types of spraying, for a walker F7 might be the strongest wind you're prepared to venture out in, or for a light aircraft pilot F5 might be right on your limits for take off and landing.

Whatever your interest or need for weather information the Beaufort scale can be an incredibly useful one to learn.

The scale below is a useful one to save and print out. Start making estimations of wind speed wherever you may be. You will be amazed at how quickly you'll learn to make accurate wind speed estimates yourself.
