UK snow: Are we on course to see a White Christmas in 2015?

With northern parts of the UK seeing snow over the weekend and with December 25th just round the corner, are we any closer to seeing a White Christmas this year?

Well, if you’re in Scotland and Ireland, you could definitely see some Christmas snow, especially on the hills.

It seems the weather will turn colder as we head into the Christmas week and with low pressure expected to be in charge too, we could get the ideal recipe for snow on December 25th.

For much of country though, anything falling from the sky is likely to stay as rain.

But for those lucky few over the hills of the north, Santa may just be landing his sleigh on the slippery stuff!'

UK White Christmas facts:

* Snow has fallen on Christmas Day somewhere in the UK 38 times in the last 52-years, according to the Met Office.

* The last official White Christmas occurred in 2010 when 83% of Met Office stations recorded snow on the ground.

* White Christmas does not mean a complete blanket of snow for the UK. The most widely used definition is for a single snowflake to fall on 25 December at a specified location. Traditionally, that was the Met Office building in London but in recent years the number of locations have risen to include places like Buckingham Palace, Coronation Street in Manchester and Pittodrie, the home of Aberdeen FC.

* The Christmas period can signal a change in the weather; in 1962 the record-breaking cold winter began just before Christmas
