Scandinavia remains in deep freeze

We might complain it’s turning cold here in Britain, but compared to current conditions across Scandinavia, we are quite balmy.

The chart below shows the daytime ‘highs’ from Wednesday, with values below -10 to -20C in northern regions.

Overnight lows have been reported below -35C in northern Sweden and Finland in recent days. Reports suggest -40C was locally reported in Lapland last week.

The next few days will see cold air drain ever further south across southern Sweden and Norway, with daytime temperatures in cities such as Stockholm and Oslo struggling at -10C. The average maximum for January here is around -1C.

Similar cold will continue into the weekend, as high pressure and general northerly flow persists.
