After a chilly January weekend, which brought a dusting of snow to many places, what does the week ahead have in store?
1. Chilly – Daytime temperatures 2 to 5C most areas for several days ahead, although the south-west will be nearer 7 to 9C. Clear nights bring frost and ice. Lows -2C towns, to -5C or lower rural spots some nights.
2. Dry – Very little rain, sleet or snow in the forecast this week. Weak fronts are held at bay over the Atlantic, and only make slow inroads toward the weekend.
3. Some sunshine – A legacy of grey skies to start the week, but drier air developing from the south-east may allow brighter skies to develop over the next few days for some.
4. Fog – Overnight fog patches across lowland central Britain may be stubborn to lift during the daytime for some areas, or lifting into low cloud, leaving a cool damp feel.
5. Much milder later – Temperatures on the rise toward the weekend as a southerly breeze develops, highs nearer 8 to 11C.
