Battle of the Somme Weather Chart 1st July 1916

Here is the original weather chart from the UK Met Office Archive showing the weather chart from Saturday 1st July 1916 (the first day of the Battle of the Somme).

It shows a typically July pattern across Britain and central Europe. A ridge of high pressure builds through the Bay of Biscay and into France with high pressure centred close to Switzerland. Low pressure is shown over Ireland (it was probably west), with a further area of low pressure over southern Norway and Sweden). A cool day was noted over the British Isles whilst the weather in France was noted as fair in the morning, but misty. The previous day had seen temperatures of 72F (22C) in Paris and Biarittz.
