Oh come on … it’s meant to be spring!

Right, can someone please have a word with the weather-machine? It's meant to be spring!

Indications from models continue to point to a resurgence of cold weather this weekend and into next week. This can't be normal can it?

Well, despite the inconvenience of the cold, it's worth remembering we have been here before, and not that long ago.

In March 2013 there were substantial snowfalls between the 6th and 27th. It was one of the coldest March's on record too, although just to prove a point about March weather being all over the shop, temperatures reach 18C in Wales on the 5th. A snow storm late in the month left drifted snow through many central and northern areas until early April.

It's interesting to see how the 500mb anomalies from March 2013 (below) ...

The patterns above are classic signifiers of a cold easterly.

So, where do we go from here? Well, the signs aren't great with models wanting to get us back into the pattern of high pressure north and low pressure south in the coming weeks. And that means the cold easterly can return.

I suspect they don't last long though as I think the westerly may well return. That is likely yo be a chilly westerly and so don't expect too much warmth before the end of the month.
