I've shown this chart in a Look Ahead recently. It shows the zonal wind around 60N. Zonal winds flow from west to east. If the W-E flow is strong then cold air can 'cling' to the Pole. If it is weaker than cold, dense air can 'slip' away from the Pole. As to where
